From two Noah's interview
IM: It’s an interesting time for you to be showing up in a small-screen film because I think everyone’s excited to catch you in the last season of ER. In what capacity will we get to see you back “at home” in what’s left of the series?
Wyle: When I left the show after the 11th season I called it a divorce with visitation rights. I left eight outstanding episodes for them to spread around wherever they wanted to. We did four in the 12th season with the Africa storyline, and then I didn’t do any in the 13th or 14th seasons. When they announced that this was the 15th and final – that left the remaining balance of four to be used somewhere, and I was really gratified to get the call that they wanted them to be the last four of the season series!

8. How do you feel now that 'ER' is coming to an end?
I'm really excited about going back, and I'm really excited about writing the final chapter to what this 15-year experience has been. I think the show's still firing on all pistons. But as long as it's on the air and I'm not on the show, it's sort of like watching somebody else raise your kids and you're accountable to it without having a contribution to it. The opinions that I've taken from cast members who have subsequently left are that we all feel similarly that the time is very right to have it go out with some grace, while still being a credible show.
9. What can you tell us about Dr. Carter's return?
I really know very little. I know less than little. I think that the narrative will be a continuation of where the character went off -- to Africa and to practice more sort of triage international medicine -- and I think it will be having to do with his return to Chicago and to the hospital in some fashion. But beyond that, who I'll be working with and what I'll be doing is anybody's guess.
10. How would you like to see Carter's storyline finish?
I think given the fact that the pilot episode for 'ER' was Dr. John Carter's first day on the job, there's a certain symmetry to him coming back in and ... running the emergency room. It has a nice sort of sense of closure and completion to it. But beyond that, I have no preferences. I'm just excited to see everyone again, and go in there and put on the white coat and help sail the ship into its sweet hereafter.
11. It was reported that you said George Clooney was "definitely" coming back for an appearance. Is that true?
No, that was a misquote that I got severely chastised for [laughs]. I said that I think overtures had been made, and schedule permitting I didn't see why he wouldn't. But I honestly can't speak to anybody else's involvement ... Everybody else is still either in the process of a negotiation or already committed, and I don't know when or where they're going to show up
