Noah Wyle in alien-fighting role TNT pilot produced by Steven SpielbergBy Nellie Andreeva June 25, 2009, 11:00 PM ET Former "ER" star Noah Wyle has signed as the lead in TNT's untitled alien-invasion pilot, marking a reunion with producer Steven Spielberg. The project, written by Robert Rodat from an idea he conceived with Spielberg, is set shortly after aliens have wiped out most of the human population. Wyle will play the leader of a ragtag group of soldiers and civilians who struggle against the occupying alien force. "It is a privilege to be starting a second series with Noah," said Spielberg, whose company was behind "ER." "The first didn't do too badly." TNT had been looking to extend into series its relationship with Wyle, whom TNT head of programming Michael Wright called "an incredibly talented actor and an extraordinary person." Wyle has starred in four original films for the cable network: the "Librarian" action-adventure franchise, which spawned three movies, and "Pirates of Silicon Valley." "I couldn't feel more at home," Wyle said. DreamWorks TV is producing the pilot, with Spielberg, Rodat, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank executive producing. Wyle, who wrapped his 15-year turn as John Carter on "ER" in the spring, is repped by ICM and Brillstein Entertainment www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/cont....5d395ec6e47eb68Other Links popculturezoo.com/archives/3521 popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/06/noah-wyle-steven-spielberg-fight-alien-invasion-sign-me-up.htmlwww.hitfix.com/articles/2009-6-26-noah-wyle-leads-tnt-s-spielberg-aliens-pilot

Hey, what happened to the custom smilies? Anyway, for that picture... it stops my heart every time. And I guess I can see the "man in the street" thing in Noah. Maybe not my street, but yeah... he's got that simple air about him and it shows even on the screen, which is why it's so easy to relate to him and that makes him very captivating. One of the things that bother me most about TV shows in general is how perfect everyone always looks... Like if you take a group of people at random, chances are they won't all be photogenic and/or look like models, but of course nobody would watch a show like, say, Prison Break or Lost of it was about middle aged, hairy, fat guys. And much the same way, I wouldn't buy a show about survivors of an alien invasion who all look like they're cut from a catalogue. Of course, if you take a group of people on the street, chances are they won't look as good as Noah, either, but it's a different kind of good looks, not the unrealistic, plastic stuff. I just love that Noah as the leader of that gang wouldn't have to be the typical "hero" type. If we're talking about everyday people that find themselves in a battle over humanity, then Noah is perfect for that, because he just radiates "normal". I love the whole concept of this show.

Yay!! ;D new subforum and new threads! Really appropriate! I guess the "man in the street" may be the translation of "every man" look that was mentioned in american articles. Not enough... I spent about an hour last week for work with a guy that looked very much like Noah in his early twenties, and that was very distracting! No idea what he babbled work-wise actually now... Oh me too ;D! Not to play Debbie Downer here, but what are the chances that it turns out to be only the pilot and the series doesn't follow? Well, it can't be, no? Spielberg, Noah, Rodat... that team can't lose!

That's always a possibility. A lot of good pilots don't get picked up. But this IS Spielberg. People will watch this no matter what, and TNT knows it. I'm hoping that the buzz this generates will be enough to get it through at least the first season, assuming it's a series. Whether or not it goes any farther than that, I think is up to the viewers and the writers and it's too early to tell. But there's plenty of interest already, so I'm going to try a new approach here: positive thinking.

From the general news thread ... : I agree. I don't think the project is calling for a 'geek' factor, but rather for a 'normal guy' aspect, which was mentioned by TNT people I think... Spielberg went for the "full package" I imagine : very talented dramatic actor, very good looking but with an everyman touch, more than able to do comedy, and with an exceptional ability to create quickly a coherent character .

I'm never going to get sick of seeing articles about this new project. This one doesn't really tell us anything we didn't know, but check this out- "So are you cool with Spielberg casting Wyle as his new TV hero? It's a good choice. In the age of heroes like Transformers' Sam Witwicky and a revamped Dr. Who, it's fitting that Spielberg would cast a geek in the lead role. And if you don't think Wyle is a geek, then you've obviously never seen those Librarian movies where he plays a tweed-wearing librarian whose superpowers are knowledge and a love of books."Yeah, okay, The Librarian, geek, I'll give them that. But I don't think it's necessarily the geek factor they're looking for here. I think he's proven enough times that he has more than just the goofiness and geekiness that you find in The Librarian. and I think 15 seasons of ER should have, by now, established that he's also a great dramatic actor. I post it here too ;D I read it, and I liked it but I agree with you, Anna, I don't think Spielberg chose Noah just for the geek factor. If his character is going to be a leader I'm sure that he's looking for more than geekines and like you said Noah proved that he's also a great dramatic actor and I suppose his dramatic skills will be really useful in this case..... I agree and that makes me think about what type of look they have in mind for Noah's character..... Check, check and check. And I don't think there're so many TV actors with all those qualities.

I even think "TV" is not needed here ... not many actors at all with all those qualities! That makes me think: I don't think TV is a bad move at all... it used to be that TV was just a launch pad before a big screen career, and I think Noah mentioned more than once that he first saw ER as such, but I don't think it's true anymore that TV is a sort of second-class medium compared to feature films. When I try to remember unforgettable movies over the past 5 years, which made a big fuss and that people were talking about a lot, I really don't have much at all coming to mind, while I can cite several series, for which I know the name of the actors and characters, and for which I notice many people around me can like to talk about... It seems to me that TV series have become more influential than movies. The fact that people like Spielberg turned to TV says a bit about that too.

You're totally right, Claire. I think ER probably was one of the first (if not the first) example of quality TV which can compete easily with the big screen. Nowadays as for acting, scripts TV series can compete with movies. And as for buzz and fandom they usually win .

Nothing really new but at least an article that doesn't take again the same sentences: Wyle will battle aliens on TNTLOL @: Noah can do it all!!! (I love that one!) Since the script is apparently not all written yet, and I don't want to be overly optimistic and get disappointed, so I don't expect anything before December I'd say... or that's too optimistic already? ETA: Adding this article because I don't think I knew the picture they are using . Yep Noah, those white things are called 'teeth' ...
