Another very nice episode, imo...
I had to think of Tom Hanks in Cast Away with seeing Tom making fire
, and Tom running away from the plane with carrying Pope over his shoulder, with the explosions in the background, made me think of Tom Hanks again in Forrest Gump in Vietnam
.
The last scene in the "hospital" made me think the first episode of season 2.
I've seen some reviews complaining that Tom was overreacting to the snake joke, and I kinda agree, but I do wonder if it's not a sign that he is close to burn out all the time. Too many responsibilities, too much pressure... I guess he will break down soon. Of course Noah said in an interview that Tom was going to go f..king mad when learning that Ann and Alexis were missing, but I think it'll have deeper consequences.
So, we learnt that Tom had an unhappy childhood, and was probably beaten by his dad. That came quite unexpected. Maybe explaining why he wants to be a perfect dad and cares so much about his children.
But I've been noticing in the last couple of episodes that each time somebody was coming into his president office, he was offering a glass of scotch.
We've seen him drinking more than once. Maybe it's nothing significant at all, but I do wonder if he is not copying with all the stress with starting to follow in his father's footsteps. That's maybe just a crazy idea, but I was wondering before if the fact that they were showing him more than once having a glass of scotch was just a coincidence... now I couldn't help but thinking of it when he was telling about his father.
All this to say: some reviews complain that Tom overreacting and fighting with Pope for no reason was bad writing, that it was out of character for Tom Mason, while I do think it has a significance. It's not lazy writing. It's to show us that Tom is close to snapping, which wasn't shown at all yet this season.
