www.citizen-times.com/article/20130403/BLACKMOUNTAINNEWS/304030019/Movie-features-Black-Mountain-residentsBlack Mountain and one of Western North Carolina’s most notorious killing fields are the center of a new movie being filmed now.
Scenes from “World Made Straight,” based on the novel by W.N.C. writer Ron Rash will feature parts of downtown, including the Old Depot. Black Mountain residents also took part in one of the key sequences, the depiction of the Civil War-era Shelton Laurel massacre in Madison County.
The film crew for the low-budget independent feature plan to work in the mountains through through April 17.
One of the stops was a March 17 shoot in downtown Black Mountain. Dark City Deli and Pub owner Jennifer Mohr said she and her husband, Bill, had no idea about the movie being made until they noticed part of Cherry Street had been shut down and then saw actor Noah Wyle, a star in the long-running television series “ER.”
“It was on St. Patrick’s Day. They had all our streets all blocked off and we went out to look around and we recognized him immediately,” Jennifer Mohr said. “He was really nice and came in and talked to people and ordered soup. They were filming right in front of our place, so we let them come in and use our bathrooms as changing rooms.”
Wyle, also a lead in the series, “Falling Skies,” is working with “War Horse” movie star Jeremy Irvine, and Minka Kelly, of television’s “Parenthood.”
The movie is based on Rash’s 2006 book about a rural Appalachian community haunted by the legacy of a Civil War massacre and a young man’s struggles to escape violence that could bind him to the past.
Rash, who takes a hands-off approach when Hollywood turns his books into movies, said he was pleased to hear almost all the filming for “The World Made Straight” will be done in Buncombe and Madison counties.
Black Mountain resident Don Talley said he was familiar with the story of the Shelton Laurel massacre when he got an e-mail from a friend about the opportunity to be an extra in the movie. While it takes up only a short piece of the film, the scene of Confederate forces murdering a family suspected of Union sympathies is a key part.
“I was part of the massacre,” Talley said. “I spent all day getting shot and falling face down in the mud.”

Thanks Dutchy! ;D I love the glasses. I always had something for glasses on a man, and that makes me very happy to see Noah wearing some for this role! ;D Just from the pictures, it looks like a whole new character, not someone looking like Noah in other roles. Just saw this little pic:
